Reducing High Radon Levels in a Petawawa Home
Challenge
A homeowner in Petawawa became concerned after testing revealed elevated radon levels inside their home. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock, and it can enter homes through cracks and openings in the foundation. Because it is colourless and odourless, radon often goes unnoticed without proper testing. After learning about the potential health risks associated with long term radon exposure, the homeowner wanted to take proactive steps to reduce the levels and improve the air quality in their home.
Our System Design Specialist conducted an assessment of the home to identify potential entry points where radon gas could be entering. During the inspection, the sump pump pit was identified as a likely pathway for soil gases to enter the basement.
Open sump pits can act as a direct channel between the soil beneath the home and the indoor living space, allowing radon gas to seep inside if the area is not properly sealed.
Solution
To address the issue, our team installed a professional radon mitigation system designed to safely redirect radon gas from beneath the home to the outside.
As part of the installation, our crew:
-Installed a radon mitigation system to actively vent radon gases outdoors.
-Added a system muffler to reduce operational noise from the mitigation fan.
-Installed a sealed sump pump pit cover to block radon gas and other soil gases from entering through the sump pit.
By sealing this major entry point and installing an active mitigation system, the home now has a more effective defense against radon intrusion.
With the mitigation system installed and the sump pit properly sealed, the homeowner now has a solution in place designed to significantly reduce radon levels inside the home. The system continuously works to redirect radon gas safely outside, helping improve the overall air quality within the basement and living spaces. The homeowner can now enjoy greater peace of mind knowing their home has been equipped with a reliable radon mitigation system
